In today's world, where nutrition information is often filled with false facts and unreliable advice, a new study has shown the transformative abilities of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in providing accurate guidance. This study examined two AI chatbots, ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4, and compared their accuracy with recommendations from human nutritionists.

Of the two chatbots tested, ChatGPT-4 performed the best in terms of accuracy, surpassing its predecessor. To establish a benchmark for accuracy, the study considered chatbot estimates within a range of 10% to 20% of the nutritionists' recommendations as accurate. Interestingly, there were no significant differences between the chatbots and human nutritionists when it came to fat, carbohydrate, and energy levels.

However, there were slight differences in protein estimations, suggesting room for improvement in this area. It's important to note that while AI chatbots can provide easy-to-understand explanations of complex topics, they are not meant to replace the expertise of human nutritionists. The personalized advice and human touch provided by professionals in the field cannot be replicated by technology alone.

However, it's important to consider certain limitations of AI chatbots. The study highlighted that chatbots may struggle to tailor responses to specific regions, as portion sizes and consumption units can vary greatly across countries and food types. Additionally, while ChatGPT is a versatile chatbot, it is not specifically trained in dietetics and nutrition. While it can provide valuable information, it may not have the same depth of knowledge as a human expert in the field.

The study conducted by researchers carefully examined the macronutrients and energy content of 222 foods in two languages. The search was conducted between September and October 2023, ensuring the analysis of the most current data available. The accuracy of chatbot responses for energy content in the included foods ranged from 35% to 48%, suggesting room for improvement.
